Economy 7 but two meters?

Hi
I have searched this forum for a definitive answer but i cant seem to get one. I live in an all electric flat and i have 2 meters. I cant post pictures as a new user but if i could i would show you my bill and my meter cupboard.

My main question is am i on Economy 7 but with two meters as one of the meters turns during the day and the other spins at night?

I am being charged 2 standing charges because i have two meters. Is that correct?

Does anyone have any advice on what suppliers to use for the cheapest option for this kind of set up?. It is impossible to use the comparison websites because of having two meters.

Any help is extremely appreciated.

Thank You

I've not been charged 2 standing charges with E7 meters. Which company are you with?

Have you actually got E7 or a RHT ?

On your bill are there 3 unit rates quoted ? What are they ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

If you've got two meters then it may not really be E7 but an older legacy tariff. Is one of the meters white? see here for a bit of an explanation https://www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/guides/white-meters/

What does you bill say your tariff is?

Most E7 tariffs have a single meter with a peak and off peak register and sometimes a time clock, sometimes a radio teleswitch and sometimes the meter has it's own inbuilt timer.

Perhaps you should discuss it with your energy supplier to see if you can get it swapped for a single meter although you might have to have some rewiring done as well - it might be worth it if it will save the standing charge cost of two meters. Ask for a smart meter and see what they say

    You do not have E7.

If you want to PM me your addreess or meter serial I can look up what you have. (only offering, if you do not want to, a pic may help but is less to go on!).

It is likely a standard meter that runs 24/7. And a RHT (restricted hours tarrif) meter that may give 7 hours or more or less!

It is important to know that you only get changed cheap rate for anything on the RHT meter which probably has a second consumer unit for it. This means that all your stuff connected to the main meter/consumer unit will be charegd at full rate 24/7.

You are probably better going to E7, depending on what it is you do have, but it may be costly (again depending on what you have!).
  • We are with Yorkshire Energy at the moment.
  • Hi,
    Thank you for your reply.

    We have 2 meters.

    One is serial no. CG00k23575
The other is serial no. CG99K10686

Ok here is what I have found

CG00K is your standard meter. This is just a standard single rate 24/7 meter. (0393 SSC)

CG99K is a RHT meter on SSC 0109. This is a timeswitched 15.5 hour off peak meter. The timeswitch may be out and the hours elsewhere, but it should provide power to it's curcuit 00:00-08:00, 13:00-16:00, and 1930:24:00 (GMT, it not changed in summer).

These are completely different supplies (do not even appear to be registered as associated), so yes there would be 2 standing charges.

Like I say I suspect they supply seperate consumer units and the RHT meter only provides heating of some discription (and all your other usage is full price 24/7).

Depending on how much heating you use it may be good for you. However I think it comes under the tarrifs that no other suppliers would touch if they knew what it was! Yorkshire Energy may have only took it because the mpans are not related. Technically npower should be the only option in the area (as far as I know, RHT may not be considered complex so I could be wrong, I would however worry what cost other companies not set up for such billing would offer).

    Changing to E7 would mean:
    1. Losing the day boost hours for the heating.
    2. Removing a meter/supply point at a cost (by distribution but supplier should sort out for you).
    3. Rewireing or more likely a change to a larger new consumer unit to accomodate all circuits. (more cost).
    4. Having your own timeswitch to time the heating to the off peak hours as this is often not provided by a modern meter. Either way your own electrician and more cost.

Not easy to know what to do without knowing what you are using and what exactly is needed.

    Hope that helps a bit.
  • Thank you so much for your help!

Bit of an embarrassment but when i moved in to this flat the electricity was already with Npower but i naively went on to a comparison website to find out if we could get a better deal and it came up with Yorkshire Energy so i switched. Since then they have charged me full rate on both of the meters and my electricity bill has been really high. One of the months i have payed £160 for 1 month.

I think Yorkshire Energy have made a mistake and have overcharged me. Is that my fault or theirs?

    Thanks again!

Yeah that was what I was thinking for a differnt company. They would just see them as two meters and not charge lower. Not that I know what npowers costs are but it should be lower for a RHT meter!

You can go to yorkshire energy but they may say we just thought it was a seperate supply and we only charge one rate for such meters and you accepted it.

Most new (post 1997/8 ;-) ) companies are only set up to deal with single rate and e7. You may have just beem seen as a customer with two single rate meters.

Not sure what is best, if you are still in contract you could argue out of it and get a switchback to npower that should be cheaper (also I'm pretty sure the mpans should be related to stop this occuring but do not expect anyone to do that!).

£160 is high but does not seem to bad for electric only. I pay £127 with gas, but I am home most days and admitedly like the heat!
