Removing a search

Hello, M&S Bank agreed to remove a credit search. They have advised me that they have told Equifax to remove it, and its not their problem (or words to that effect) - can I ask for advice on who is responsible for that data being removed?

The CRA's will only remove it at the request of the lender.

So if it's not removed in say a fortnight or so's time then go back to M&S again and ask them why and to chase it up.

As above, the CRAs can only remove whatever M&S Bank have instructed them to remove - this can take a while, depending on where about in the reporting cycle this takes place but should definitely happen within 4-8 weeks. If the search is still present after this time, it would be worth chasing both Equifax and M&S Bank - Equifax to see if the instruction has been acted upon, and if they say they haven't received any instructions then you'll need to chase M&S Bank again.

Hi all

Thanks for the responses. The search has been present for 9 months. M&S are trying to tell me I need to take it up with equifax as they have asked/told them to remove the search.

Some might argue that for sake of three months (when it drops off) is it worth the hassle. In my opinion it is, it’s the principal and something they have promised me and haven’t acted on that promise.

He is also telling me that I now have no right to go to the FOS as I’m past the six months. Not sure if I can or not because ultimately something they promised me 9 months ago hasn’t been actioned.

Contact Equifax to request the search removed.


Equifax will contact the company that performed the search and if they agree for it to be removed, then Equifax will remove the search from your report within 28 days I believe?
