Carers Assessments

Hi,
I had a carers assessment with social services setting out my needs as a carer.
I mentioned I need short break they stated it has to be paid for and only for 6 weeks maximum of 8 hours per week. Is this correct?
I mentioned the care act 2014 about carers right to ask for a direct payment to employ a worker to cook, clean and do outdoor activities she was baffled and said we don't do that here. We only give one off short term support not long term, its upto the individual to be reassessed to get more help.
She also claimed that DWP benefits are intended to cover care needs? Anywhere in the care act does it state that?
I felt my needs as a carer were not met and the adviser seemed unhelpful.

You might find some useful information on the CarersUK site https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/practical-support/getting-care-and-support/carers-assessmentInformation I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0

Yes it's right. Local councils can set their own support and thresholds needed to be met. We get nothing in liverpool. You won't get care needs covered via a carers assessment anyway. The disabled person will need their needs assessed but again councils can set thresholds and only accept the highest priority needs to meet. So unless they have particularly Hugh needs ie bed bound, non verbal, high medical needs they could get nothing. And yes they can demand you pay towards the cost of any short breaks.0 -
I had a carers assessment last year and for this they included my daughters needs in with it because they had already done a needs assessment for her.
She had an additional lump sum added for respite but i have a health condition myself and that was taken into consideration for that. I know it depends on your local councils budget too. I also didn't ask for this either, it was just given.
When you say activities outside what do you mean by that?
Also as it's cooking and cleaning you want i'm not sure a needs assessment would actually cover that. You could of course pay someone yourself to do this type of thing.0
