Started a gym membership and... Wow! Is this even legal?

Brief summary:

1) You open their website (can't post links, gym is "westgate leisure centre") and are enticed with a £30 per month deal that "Includes unlimited access to all of our gym facilities, swim sessions and group exercise classes."

2) I went there, conditions were valid, I signed up. All good!

3) Few days later (less than 1 week), I received a beautiful email from them that in part says:
With effect from 1st April 2019, Direct Debit payments due in respect of the above instruction will increase to £49.95 due to an annual company price increase, and will be collected on or immediately after 1st April 2019 and the first working day of each month thereafter.

4) I go to their website and... surprise! Price is still being advertised as £30.

I am literally !!!!ed off but, before anything else, is this even legal ???

  • Tell them to stuff it
  • Report them to the local trading standards. Take a screenshot of the website and give them the link.

Check what their cooling off period is and cancel your application.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Check to see that it's not been sent in error.

There are other more expensive options on the site.

As someone else has mentioned - there should be a cooling off period in the T&Cs

    This!

They apologised and said it was sent in error (and apparently it affected several people). Yet, weirdly enough, they never sent a second email apologising / saying to ignore the price increase.
If I hadn't asked I'd still be worried about this...

I'd want an email / letter to confirm it was an error or i'd be cancelling..

Welcome to gym world .. the receptionists and admin are humans that don’t care, probably have never used a gym in their lives and love sending out debt letters to members who cancel.. don’t take it seriously, find a good gym, that has decent facilities with a decent price and go train !!
