Right To Buy Scheme after Succession 4 years ago

Hello I would like to get some advice from some smart people please, in 2003 my mom started her tenancy and it was our family home since then, about 4 years ago all family moved out and I succeeded the tenancy from her. Iv just found out that i can use my pip grant for a mortgage and im very keen on the idea, i went to the bank and they made a morgage in principle for me and it looks like ill be paying 100 pound less for morgage than my rent is so i am very keen for it. I was reading we also get a good discount for how many years we have lived here for but what im not sure about is can i get the discount from my moms all years from living here since 2003 as well as my own after the succession in 2015 or will i have to get my mom to buy the house with me.

    It''s likely will be counted since year you were 16. Remember, if you qualify for full discount, longer years won't matter.

    Hi Amara thanks so much for your help. I dont think im understanding the first part of your answer though, do you mean its likely it will be counted (as in from 2003) or its likely to only be counted from my tenancy start 2015? If my mom buys the property with me will that make a difference to the discount. In my understanding a succession is not a new tenancy but a transfer of an existing tenancy. Thanks again for helping me understand this.

    sorry and it was recently declassified from a 4 bed to a 3 bed not sure if it matters or not but ill put it out there

    If my mom buys the property with me will that make a difference to the discount.
    If she is no longer on the tenancy her previous tenancy of the property will no longer be counted.

    Norman spot on thanks a lot for your help with that, and per the succession or transfer of a tenancy do you happen to know if i get those of her years added to mine that way or have i basically a new tenancy all together with my own new years of discount rate started from 2003? Thanks again

    A succession takes place when someone dies.

    A legal transfer of tenancy is called an assignment.

    If you are assigned a tenancy or you succeed you do not normally get the previous tenants right to buy discount. However this may depend on the Landlord as they may have special rules.

    Your mum is no longer a tenant and has no legal rtb on the property. Her years wouldnt normally count at all even if she helped you buy it as she gave up all rights.

    Have you spoken to your Landlord?

    Were you named on your mums tenancy as a joint tenant?

    I suspect your discount will be from when you succeeded the tenancy. I'm not sure if being the child of a tenant entitles you to the discount from 2003, I suspect not. Contact your landlord to find out what discount is available to you.
