ive made my first ever planter, to fit in a small space so it can only really be 3" deep soil in it. Is this too shallow for anytihng at all?

Or are there any bedding plants that will grow in it for the summer?

Am new to gardening so apologies if its a silly question :o

Most bedding plants will grow in it, you only need to watch for things with big taproots, or things that are going to be really top heavy. but things like nasturtiums, begonias, trailing geraniums, petunias shoud be ok.
If it's on a balcony for example, the plants can be trained over the edge which will take some weight off the roots.

With that shallow rooting space you will need to only grow short plants, tall ones will just blow over without enough roots to hold them

    Something like thyme, saxifrages, nasturtiums,

Many annuals would "do" but the lack of soil depth would limit their eventual size, you could even grow a buddlia in there for instance, we've all seen them growing out of cracks in walls

No such thing as a "silly " question about anything, we have to learn. Well done on trying.
How about some pansy or Anemones, lily of the valley are nice and their roots do not go deep
Treat other's how you like to be treated.

I would think your biggest problem will be watering it over the summer. With so little soil, it will dry out really fast and at times might need watering twice a day or more.
