Anyway - found an 'Office 365', 'five user' one on E Bay for under a fiver (thanks to the person who PM'd me that) so have gone with that.

Just sorted a laptop and then had exactly same issue with genuine office key on a card. MS wouldn't allow a new install as it was associated with an account. So went through the process of using the account to find it had been hacked and the laptop owner was unaware until I showed the detail of the recovery email and phone detail, none of them the owners.
