Oh yeah I forgot to mention there was actually another account transferred from Woolwich to Barclays. They managed to trace that with no problems and I got the cheque few weeks ago.
There's just the question of the account that apparently was closed and cheque sent, which was news to me.
Surely if someone living at your old address was receiving statements and correspondence about two accounts and decided to fraudulently profit from this, they'd have emptied both of them?

Just to be clear, you did tell Barclays/Woolwich that you'd moved from Dutch address to another specified one? You've referred several times to telling them to stop sending to an old address, as opposed to informing them of your new address - it might seem like a pedantic distinction but perhaps I'm reading between non-existent lines!

Yeah well of course that did occur to me as well, why defraud just one account, although the other one was considerably less money.
Anyway the whole thing could be solved if I made a mistake or whatever the reason, by them supplying me with details what happened to the cheque, that's all I asked for, but that's the information so far I haven't been getting.

As to the the address thing when I did move, I sent them a letter I will be moving, do not send any more statements until further notice and hold my statements until contacted regarding my new address.

But they kept sending statements and the person living there complained to me, via email why am I still getting your bank letters, so I sent another two letters to Barclays to stop it and eventually they stopped sending them to Holland.

Another thing I should mention, after informing Barclays last year, re my new address in Germany, I recently was informed by the same person in Holland, he received yet another letter from them last month, so looks like the whole performance is starting again!
The guy from Holland sent it on to me and I received it last week, Barclays said you haven't given us your details, please update your information.
Despite the fact they were informed last year of new address and of course they actually been writing to me here at new address about this missing account for months and even sent me that cheque for the other one, yet are starting sending letters to Holland again, that's incompetent! What else could you call that?
In fact I would call it irresponsible, if they weren't sure of my details, they should never have sent me that cheque for other account in the first place.
So perhaps you can see why I am concerned about that missing cheque and not totally overwhelmed with Barclays customer service.

Yes of course UK address would have been preferable, but that's not always possible for everyone, in my case it wasn't.
Yes, but at the end of the day that's on you not the bank. People like us who choose to live abroad have to ensure that we keep our financial information current. I always call and then put it in writing. Then call a couple of weeks later to ensure that my letter was received and they have updated my information.
It is too easy to take for granted speaking on the phone with someone and accept that they will carry out your wishes.

I don't think it's too much to ask for the bank to tell me what happened to that cheque, especially as they kept sending statements to an invalid address, which they were told several times not to.
Which of course leaves it open to fraud.

Calling up and asking a bank to do something is completely fine, but one needs to follow that up in writing.
The person you spoke may not have done what was required, hence the problem you are in now.

I kept my house in the UK with a repayment mortgage and the old endowment going. I kept in touch with the insurance company by writing letters and ensuring that my address with them was current . I have used several address since being abroad. If I was not sure that they had my correct UK address, I would call to check, because I knew when my endowment was due.
Regarding the Woolwich I only found out my accident that they were bought out by Barclays, I somehow got a telephone number, called it and was told that I would have to write in with my correct information in order to have the money which was in a closed account returned to me.

This is another scenario I found myself in.
My sister had my Nationwide book, I wanted the number to check the account, she kept delaying and giving me excuses.
Finally one day I did a search on the Internet, called up Nationwide, explained the situation to them and they were very helpful.
I also asked if I could sign up for online banking, this way I would not have to deal with my sister anymore.
They send all the details to my UK address, I got my online banking, got access to my account and my sister is none the wiser.
I know this does not help your situation, but living abroad is a hassle and I would advise those of us who choose to live abroad to sign up for online banking before moving, keep at least one credit card and keep a UK address.
I also choose to go paperless, check my online accounts at last twice per week from the same computer and always at home.
I know this will not help you, but it might help someone who is thinking of moving abroad

If you have not gone higher up the chain, I would do so. You are wasting your time speaking/writing to those lower down the chain and they are trying to fob you off.

I would call and ask to speak to a Supervisor or someone in management, or
send a letter by registered mail/Fedex/UPS to the CEO/management (more than one person) - mark it "Private and Confidential" .

I'm confused. I thought the OP had a missing cheque? Do you too? Or are you one and the same person and got your personalities mixed up?

The OP had a missing cheque and is being fobbed by the staff.
That's why I suggested the OP goes higher up the chain by writing a letter with the history sending either by registered mail/Fedex/UPS.

I was with Woolwich, but was able to resolve my issue because I had a UK address.
My money went into a dormant account, once I wrote to Barblays and gave them all the information I was able to receive my cheque.

Could I suggest you start using the quote feature? You’re just making confusion by posting other people’s words in your posts.

I will try, but having a comprehension of what is written is all that is required.
I could read that and understand that the first part relates to a question that was asked. The second relates to the person answering the question.
  • To include a previous post in your reply, first click on the orange 'speech bubble' that appears under the post you wish to include. That post will then appear in the 'reply to thread' box. You then type your bit underneath it. If the post you are quoting has too much information in it, you can delete some of it.

It's not that we can't understand things (eventually), it's just very time consuming trying to unpick what you are writing. If you use the orange 'speech bubble' to quote a post, then readers of your posts can identify your words immediately and will easily be able to relate them back to the post you are quoting. We may not even need to fully re-read the original post you are quoting in order to understand you, but as it stands we are struggling to pull out the relevant pieces without straining our brains.
