Even if you take your PC to the lounge near the router, the WiFi speed may not improve a lot. When you need full speed, an ethernet cable is necessary.

I may wheel it into the lounge to see what speed it gets next to the router. Good idea.

It depends on your router as well as your WiFi card. If the router doesn't have MIMO capabilities, there isn't much you can do.

The "elephant in the room" still hasn't been answered ... WHY do you need a higher speed? Are you seeing issues at your PC with "only" 45 meg? If yes, what are those issues and what are you doing (e.g. gaming?) to experience such issues? (i.e. it may not even be a speed issue - it could be an increased ping time issue due to a Wi-Fi connection).

I thought it's because his internet speed is 200 Mbps and he's getting 45 with the laptop...
If the connection speed between the laptop and the router is 45 Mbps, often the "internet speed" you get is less than that.

Which still doesn't answer the question ... if it's not causing any noticeable issue, why is it a problem?

Internet speed (200 meg) is what the router is syncing at ... 45 meg is what the Wi-Fi throughput is (i.e. most likely tested using speedtest.net or similar). Other than seeing a number less than 200 (and less than what you get with an Ethernet connection), what problem is it causing? If we know WHY the OP is concerned, we can offer better help.

As he says in the OP, he just wants to get a speed nearer to that which he is paying for.
It's a mind over wallet problem......;)

If the router has a 1 gig port and the PC also has a 1 gig port then close to 200 meg is easy to achieve. ;)

Also with WiFi is not terribly difficult. My laptop connects at 866 Mbps with the access point, but it does use 2x2 MIMO and 5 Ghz.
If the router/access point doesn't support MIMO and only has one antenna, then it's pretty much impossible to go above a certain speed.
