Three yrs ago (almost 4), I was given a Labtec Webcam. It is compatable with Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP and my machine is XP. I've been through the set-up procedure but toward the end, I formed the opinion that something wasn't as it should be.
However, via a bit of clicking I gained the page which showed me on screen. I was able to clic and save a pic of myself in the gallery.
I then went to video. This is where I encountered:-
Indeo Video Playbeck. The program you are trying to run requires a current INDEO codec. To obtain a current driver that is compatable with this version of Windows, please contact the manufactures at http://indeo.ligos.com
So now I'm feeling unsettled, unsure and afraid to move. In a word, I lack confidence. I am thinking that as this Webcam is old, maybe I should replace it with a new up-to-date model and hope all goes well. What opinions do you have?.
Oh yes, I was told to do a test on the microphone, which I thought might have been inbuilt on the camera, but I'm now of the opinion that there isn't one, and I have to buy/introduce one to another usb port, is that right?
But whilst on, any pic of myself saved in the gallery, what use is it to anyone?
Had the video of myself worked and saved, what use would that have been?
I have a couple more questions, but feel I've asked too many already.
Ten mins later!!!
I've just looked at that link and it seems I might well have to purchase whatever it is I'm supposed to have. Don't fancy that.

Thankyou for that link which worked and we now have video plus I've saved a bit. Next thing is to sort out the microphone feature. I'll have a look to see if there's a mike on the cam, but don't think there is.

You should be able to pick up a PC compatible microphone for a few quid. Have seen them in places like ASDA, poundland etc. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Now that's interesting. I too had seen them in £1 shops and wondered if they were any use. Presumably they too are via a USB port.
We now move onto something else. I video'd a few seconds of our lounge and thought I'd email it vai the rt clic button to my son and myself, but was given this message:-
The host 'SMTP' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'HTTP', Server: 'SMTP', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D
Now I should say that I haven't been able to use Outlook Express for years, hence setting up email accounts with yahoo & hotmail. Rather than try to sort it out, maybe I should copy it and insert it via my said accounts?.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. dont buy the over the ear mic from poundland, you cant wear it over your ear,it has to be right up almost touching your mouth to pick up any sound. Most mics I have seen, plug into the microphone socket(sometimes pink) on your pc.0

Don't forget there's a setting in Windows Volume Control, under Microphone > Advanced, to turn a BOOST on, I seem to need this for every mic.0

Are you looking at the file itself and selecting to "Send To"? Don't.
Everytime you use the camera it will create a file. Open up an email using whatever method you want and drag'n'drop the file onto it.
If your'e not sure where the files are then do a search of the hardrive for files created "today".

Was in Poundland recently and they had PC mic's. They are on a boom, about 12" long, with a jack plug that goes into the PINK microphone socket.0
