Living with partial dentures

I'm getting mine tomorrow (dentist made a smaller plate to allow for my swollen tongue due to palsy and he put 3 teeth instead of 2 to fill the gap I had) when I had the fitting last week I asked about removing them at night and he said I didn't have to, but make sure I cleaned them properly.
It's surprising how easily I have got on without front teeth, but after 4 weeks it be nice to be able to eat a bit eeasier(fingers crossed).
Best wishes to you OP I hop things will get better for you. xx0 -
The teeth look lovely and I can finally smile. It's the palate that's bothering me. I keep touching it and knocking it with my tongue. Just bought some boiled sweets as suggested to try and reduce the amount of saliva. I was going to call the dentist but I think I will persevere for a few more days.
Thank you everyone for your kind words.0 -
Keep at it, it will get better. And don't leave them to soak in Steradent or anything like that.
Brush them with toothpaste and leave them to soak in water overnight.
Steradent will weaken the plate over time and make it prone to breakages.
Also, if for some reason you forget to leave them in water, when you put it back in the following morning, it will feel strange as it will be dry - don't worry, after a little while it will feel normal again
As everyone says, things will get better and you won't even know it's there.
I don't use any fixing stuff as I found it mank and made things worse - oh and I eat everything - I have a top plate, a partial but with teeth either side of my mouth and one at the front0 -
Thank you for all of your help. First day back at work today. Have got a bag full of straws so I can drink and some adhesive in my bag. Hope you all have a lovely day.0

One thing, if you use adhesive, get a flavour free one, I picked up a strong holding one by mistake and it was a horrible taste,
Also with regards to overnight, does anyone know why you are supposed to take them? My sister was told to leave hers inTreat other's how you like to be treated.

If you take your shoes off at night, take your dentures out. We are not designed to wear big bits of plastic 24 hours a day.
Leaving them in if you have teeth left means you are more likely to get gum disease and decay around your remaining teeth
Leaving them in if you have no teeth means you are more likely to get yeast infections which will cause your gums to swell up and your dentures to become ill fitting.
If you have metal on your dentures don't use steradent but notherwise use steradent/miltons and COLD water. Using hot water weakens the plastic.
Keep your dentures damp/wet when not in your mouth , otherwise they shrink and change shape.0 -

Sorry to pick up on this late - but the boiled sweet idea is not a very good one!
They're sugary, and because they roll round your mouth for a fair few minutes, will begin to rot the teeth you have left.
Sugar-free mints, possibly, but the artificial sweeteners used in them can have a laxative effect if used too much.
My overall impression of your concerns Elizabethsmum [\b] is that you're just panicking a bit early. The first few days with a bit of plastic stuck in your mouth is always going to be difficult, and it will be the only thing you think about, and your entire mind & mouth will focus on it.
As others have said, it does get better. Look at what some kids wear & get used to in the way of fixed & removable braces! Those are far worse contraptions that a few teeth on a palate - but kids are much more adaptable, and tend to get on with it without too much overthinking. Just a bit of whinging to parents, who generally just say "just get on with it"
So - just get on with it!!!:D
It does get better
Oh - and don't panic over the boiled sweets. They won't have done any harm in a day or two. But put them in the bin now!How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
I've had a good day at work. Because I've been busy all day I kind of forgot about them. I wasn't playing with them. Had them in since 7am and they still feel great. Speech was a problem sometimes but I just spoke slower. Couldn't eat the staff lunch though so I will take soup in for tomorrow. I couldn't cope with the boiled sweet touching the palate. It didn't feel right.
Onwards and upwards !!0
