Electricity Meter readings

Should meters be read by supplier by law? Ours has not been read for 5 years, and only been estimated (even when changing supplier) resulting in huge bill on house move!

Not any more. Any problems could have easily been resolved by you reading the meter. Good practice is to read the meter and submit readings at least monthly. All estimated bills have a statement about submitting an accurate read.

There is no obligation on suppliers to come and read your meters although they should try and get readings from you. Most bills I've seen do give info on how to send in a reading to your supplier.

It's not difficult to read your meter and send in the readings nor is it everso hard to check your bills and make sure that any estimated readings are corrected.

There really isn't any reason why you should end up with ginormous bills if you put a bit of effort in to making sure that your bills are corrected if they are wrong. Most suppliers have on-line accounts so they are easy to check and giving regular readings should eliminate the problem entirely.

5 Years and you relied on estimates?:rotfl:

Is your meter hard to get to or read? depends on your circumstances, but perhaps get someone to read it for you if any difficulty.

Hope you do better in your new house and submit readings, or you may get another huge bill or end up paying way to much.

I assume not as they say:
