New garden railings starting to rust

Hello, this is my first post so hopefully it's in the right place!

In December 2018 we had around 24 metres of galvanized railings installed in our garden. Three months later and rust is appearing and two of the bolts securing them into the paving slabs have worked loose. We're really not happy and we're going to contact the person that installed them. We're unsure what tack to take though. I want a full refund as they're only going to rust more and more and then get them replaced with some from a different company. Is it best to go straight in with this or let the tradesman know what has happened and see what he suggests? To be honest we weren't overly impressed with his communication through the whole process so I can see this becoming a bit of a battle.

Any advice much appreciated!

Well yes , you need to speak to them.
It might be worth emailing the issues so you have a written record of the conversation .
  • A repair is adequate if that's what he wants to offer - I would say repairing the fixings and coating with a good, weatherproof coating would resolve the issue.
  • Thanks for the replies, hollydays and mattyprice 4004. I'm definitely going to email as I have photos that I want to send.

I imagine he would offer to make them good but I'm wary as surely galvanized railings shouldn't start to rust after 3 months? He suggested we go with the fixings as he said that the ones we wanted would be more liable to crack the slabs. As it turned out he cracked a couple of slabs anyway. He seemed to advise us against what we wanted and went with what he wanted to do. Our builders have also noticed that some of the railings aren't straight. I don't know if I'd trust him to do a decent job of repairing them.

Most galvanized railings come with a guarantee of x number of years against rust, I take it there was nothing like this with the railings you have?
  • As far as I'm aware there wasn't a guarantee
  • Those question marks weren't supposed to be there!
