Hi,
Here are official responses from Tesco and Sainsbury's customer services received today:
TESCO:
=================================================
Thank you for your email.
Any coupons, which display the Tesco logo, are Tesco specific. We only accept these if the products referred to on the coupons are purchased. This is because we negotiate savings with our suppliers on the condition that these actual products will be purchased.
With regard to coupons from brand name manufacturers, we are happy to accept one, even if you have not purchased the product. However, the coupon must be in date and Tesco must sell the item. If you present more than one identical coupon, then you must purchase the same number of products.
This also applies to coupons printed from the Internet. However, these will only be accepted at the discretion of the Store Manager.
Also, we are currently accepting coupons for Sainsburys and Safeway both in our stores and for on-line grocery transactions. Just hand your coupons to your driver when your groceries are delivered. We'll credit your payment card back at the store. If you are in-store, just hand these to the cashier.
Please note the following:
We can only accept Sainsburys or Safeway branded coupons for money off your total transaction.
We cannot accept coupons valid only for specific products or departments.
We can only accept up to £15 worth of coupons for one delivery.
You must have met any requirements on the coupon, such as a minimum spend.
We can only accept them against grocery deliveries. We cannot accept them for deliveries from our warehouses.
We may refuse to accept coupons if they appear to be damaged, defaced, altered or copied.
This offer applies for a limited period only.
We cannot accept coupons for purchases of tobacco or infant milk formulae.
Excludes ROI.
I trust this information is helpful.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain our policy.
If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us at customer.service@tesco.co.uk.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding money off vouchers.
I have checked with our Knowledge Team and I am afraid you cannot use money off vouchers from other stores in our stores, petrol stations or online. Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause
I can confirm that you can use printable vouchers in our stores provided that they have barcode and the date printed on them is valid. Please be aware that you do need to purchase the actual product they relate to. This also applies to both cut out coupons and manufacturers coupons.
The acceptance policy for vouchers and coupons is company wide and cannot be overridden by any store.
Kind regards,
Christine Lockwood

With regards to Sainsburys - I was there last night (clearing them out of their Nestle Shredded Wheat Fruitful BOGOF £1.74 with the Joey coupons on) and I asked if they could accept the Joey £3 coupon. A supervisor was send for and the decision was that is it scanned and had the NCH address and was in date then they would accept it !!!! So it is not really a case of overriding the policy - more a case of just scanning the coupons.
10 @ £1.74 = £17.40
BOGOF - £8.70
Coupon - £3.00
Total £5.70 i.e. 57p per box each box with a £3 coupon.
If I manage to redeem all the coupons then I will be £24.30 better off and oh so healthy after eating all that Shredded Wheat. Mind you I won't get through that amount of Fruitful (or coupons) for a few month.Your really can not beat a good bargain !!!0 -
Why is Tesco extra in Beckton, & Tesco in Barking the exceptions to the rest of the country? Can tesco not clarify this to the store manager's there as I am pretty cheesed off to the extent that I have stopped shopping there as much as possible. Tesco Barking store manager was adamant even when I showed an email like this that I received personally from Tesco head office.
It's like why me?
Whilst Upton Park Tesco metro will take 5 vouchers0 -
Went to two different Tescoes in Essex and offloaded £15 worth of coupons from the Daily Mail magazine offers this week and have shedloads of Sainsburys magazine vouchers. Yet I know another Tesco within a 7mile radius refuses ALL vouchers.Saving money right, left and centre0

1 will accept coupons but no internet ones
1 will accept half your total bill
1 will not accept any even if I show them the tesco email
I believe its up to the manager if they accept coupons. Thanks to everyone who posts comps :T0 -
Hi -
I would suggest to everyone that has problems redeeming vouchers at their local Tesco stores to EMAIL Tesco customer service:
customer.service@tesco.co.uk
Let them know the store name/location and the name of the manager or shop assistant involved. As they have a company-wide policy on accepting coupons, they should honour it.0 -
It seems to me that supermarkets have no obligation whatsoever to accept coupons from other supermarkets, or to take manufacturere's coupons against different products.
However, they may choose to accept some, say from a marketing or goodwill point of view. I imagine supermarket managers do have a degrere of local discretion as to how they run their store - e.g dependent on net profits and local competition - so practice (as distinct from policy) will vary store to store - for example each store will have a promotional budget.
Therefore I believe that it is counterproductive to demand policy statements from Supermarkets in this area, or to harass checkouts or customer service desks where there is a refusal to accept a coupon - the more the flack, the more likely, in the medium term, that there will be a general refusal to acept coupons for other than their prime stated purpose.
So, take it as goodwill - if you succed, a bonus, if you fail, you have lost nothing.0 -
Couldn't agree more! Counterproductive to make a fuss.............move on......get a refund on your purchase at customer services....try a different till.........or a different supermarket.
Nice name.if i had known then what i know now0 -
went to tescos today. bought £26 worth of food. gave her a handful of vouchers and just said "can you check to see if any of these work please"
she scanned the lot. paid £14 for the shopping! lol was well chuffed!
Not one was for anything that i had bought. in there were things like free chips and free jar of sacla. The free sacla one wouldnt go through properly so she just deducted £2.49 off.0 -
Been to Tescos, visited same cashier i always go to to be told he cant take coupons anymore, gutted!!0
