Moving House

i am moving house in 2 weeks and wanted to find out if I can choose and energy supplier now or if I have to wait until I have moved in? I’d like to lock into the British Gas deal but fear I may be too late by the time I move.

You can start looking but when you move in you need to resister with the existing supplier, open an account with them and give them your meter readings. Make sure you get an account number and record your opening reading yourself (don't rely on someone else doing it - even your Dad). Take a photo if possible and save it somewhere safe.

You can then immediately initiate a transfer to your chosen supplier. You will have to pay the existing supplier for the energy that you've used from the day you moved in to the day of transfer to your chosen one.

Doing it any other way will cause you problems.

Dont forget to give your previous supplier a closing meter reading when you move out and make sure that you keep your own records.

Do it all on the day - make a list of important things to do so they dont get forgotten or overlooked.

  • Thanks. Hopefully I can still nab a decent deal before the price increase in April.

The vast majority of the price increases in April so far notified relate to suppliers standard variable tariffs only.
If you really want one of them, which are often the supplier's most expensive tariffs anyway, they will go up w.e.f. April whenever you 'nab' them ;)
