Yellow UV glasses?

If I wanted to use a UV torch to look for "biological contamination"
_pale_ , as in CSI, would any pair of yellow safety glasses work, or would I need special ones?

UV is normally used to kill biological contamination.

They work better with The Who playing in the background. (Sorry, no idea.)

The reason you see forensic specialists using tinted glasses is two-fold. Firstly they offer some protection against the UVA light emitted from the UV torch or black light but more importantly they use different coloured lenses to enhance the fluorescence and help determine specific substances. Most retail black light torches are a weak source of UV so you won't really need that much protection.

You don't really need yellow glasses.

Urine will glow in the light of the torch, blood needs spraying with a fluorescent dye such as luminol to show up.

Here's a site which explains how UV works:-

  • I installed some UV LEDs into a head torch, and the effect on my Vaseline Glass bowl in pretty spectacular.

Nice. Is that the kind of glass that contains uranium?

    Uranium Oxide actually, but yes.

I bought it to test my Geiger counter.

Have you tried it on Brazil nuts? Wonder if they are active enough to noticeably raise the background count ..
