Unknown transaction

Apologies if this isn't the correct forum. I've seen a transaction on my statement for Sainsburys OPT 1066 and not sure what it is. I know SACAT is for self checkouts but never seen OPT.

First and most obvious question - have you bought anything at Sainsburys? Or anything for that amount?

Call your bank, they should be able to tell you more information, like the location of the payment.

Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • These acronyms have changed a lot over the years. Never seen OPT though - perhaps the admin assistant who set up the retailer account within the card processing bank just hit the wrong key when entering the merchant description - it does happen.

UPT has been used for Unattended Payment Terminal but the 'P' was often mis-stated as being 'Petrol'.

CAT is used to mean 'Cardholder Activated Transaction or Terminal' which could be petrol or in-store.

SACATs came about some time in the late 1990s early noughties but were not an officially recognised term at that time. It was supposed to mean 'Semi-Automated Cardholder Activated Terminal' (I think)and related to the sort of in-store terminals you use yourself but where there is a staff member on hand overseeing the process.

The term CAT has also been misused for years to mean 'Continuous Authority Transaction'. That sort of transaction should be an RT (Recurring Transaction) or an IPT (Instalment Payment Transaction).

The we have AFD for 'Automated Fuel Dispenser' and so on.

Confused? Here endeth the first load of absolute babble.
