Management Company AND Residents Association?

Wondering if anyone can offer advice as google searches have proved fruitless!
We currently have a residents association (unrecognised) and are about to take over control of the residents management company which was populated by directors from the freeholder.
There is some confusion as to whether there is a need to continue with the residents association in addition to the management compant.
1) Is it a legal requirement to have both? I dont believe it is...
2) Can anyone attest to their being any benefit to continuing with the residents association? I cant see what they can add that cant be covered by the new management company...

    At both places I have lived we have owned the freehold of the development and run the management company.

    Neither had a Residents Association.

    I see no need for both. It's the same people discussing the same things - with more control!
