Do I have to use BT?

We have recently moved into a new-build rented flat and are looking at getting a phone line and broadband connected. After taking a look at the BT options, we decided thay we would prefer to go with Orange (my girlfriend currently has her mobile contract with them), on their MAX package.
As our phone line needs connecting (I really dont mind paying the £124-00), do we have to use BT (and sign-up) for a 12 month contract for the line rental, or would Orange arrange for the phone-line to be installed?
Does anyone know of any other providers out there that offera similar service to orange (around the same price) and would connect our phone line?
Any help is most appreciated.
Regards
Craig

Short answer, yes you do.
From 1st May 2007, for customers ending their service early, we replaced the existing charges with a policy that requires customers who have ordered a line on or after 1st May to pay the outstanding line rental for the 12-month minimum term of their contract, up to a maximum of £70 (incl. VAT). Customers moving home and transferring BT service to their new address will be subject to a new minimum term from the date of start of service at the new address.
When you cancel the contract you only pay the outstanding line rental for the 12-month minimum term of their contract, up to a maximum of £70 (incl. VAT). So if say 3 months were left you would only pay 3 x £10.50p= £34.50p.

For info, the companies I have come across that say they do reconnections/installs:
BT - £125
Madasafish - £115
PlusNet - £105
Bulldog - £99
With Madasafish and PlusNet you are not tied into a 12 month contract for phone - just need to give 1 months notice.
An amendment to the above, PlusNet will only do an install for you if you are an existing customer moving home - it's not available to new customers.

Do you live in a cable area?
If so and the internet speeds are important that may be a better option, also is your exchange unbundled as that may also give you other options.

Has anybody switched to the Phone Co-op?
Any experienced opinions would be useful since I am considering a move from Beatie since receiving their latest threat regarding payment charges and the hikes in evening call charges.
Particularly worried about ensuring a seamless change."It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

You can avoid BT,S Evening Call charges by keeping your line rental with them, but place your evening and weekend calls through Primus for Free.

I've used thephone.coop for a line restart in my new place. It was £5.88 as opposed to free with BT but I'm not in a 12 month contract - only 3 (new lines are 12 mths).
So far so good. I'm missing caller ID that I had free with BT but other than that it's fine. I've got freeola broadband (1 month contract) and hopefully I'll be having primus saver 2 too. (I use 1899 too).0 -
Moved house and took over the line in January. Since then have moved to talktalk (for my sins!!). Recently heard that i should have stayed with BT for 12 months. However no-one told me this when i spoke to BT about taking over the line and i haven't had anything in writing about this or signed any contract. Can they make me pay?0

I phoned Sky two days ago and they were more than happy for me to go with them and they would pay for my BT connection as i'm with virgin at the moment.
They will put the money onto your account and you will go straight into credit. All you have to do is supply them with the recipt from BT.
This can mean that you have nothing to pay for the next seven months. Depends on which plan of course.
I'm still thinking of it, i'm only after Sky one. Dont really work out for me at the moment.
Good luck:oCurrent Debt £38,000:o

Are you saying you are getting BT to install line and Sky are going to refund the £125 cost?
If you are moving line rental to Sky who is paying the penalty for breach of contract £70?0 -
Before i accepted such an offer i would like to see it in writing.:D0
