Daughters credit report

Hi,my 21 year old daughter recently tried to get a new phone and contract but was declined , her last contract has expired which she paid for every month without missing a payment for two years, she works and has a good record at the bank having never been overdrawn and savings of £3000 for her first car, she doesn't own a credit card but does live with her mum who has a pretty awful credit score, would that affect my daughter's score? Or is it a case of not having any loans or credit cards affecting it?

  • An address is not linked to a persons “credit score” in the way you are thinking.

Also the scores aren’t a real thing that lenders use when making their lending decisions.

It could be that the provider just didn’t want to have her as a customer.

Was she applying for a sim only contract or one with a phone as well?

It was a sim/phone deal, she can have one with her current provider (carphone warehouse) with no problems but she wanted to go to sky mobile as it was a better deal, sky would let her have the plan on monthly but not the phone which she would have to buy upfront
  • The phone would form part of a finance agreement and she obviously didn’t fit the customer criteria for Sky.

It could be due to having a “thin” credit file.

If she wants to build this and get some credit history behind her then she should apply for a credit card, use it for normal monthly expenditures and then pay it back in full after each statement month.

Use an eligibility checker to see what she may be eligible for.

    And again ignore the score/ratings.

Go for a slightly cheaper phone and go sim only.

She can check her free reports from the 3 agencies for any discrepancies.

    Mse credit club is Experian

    Noddle/TransUnion is call credit

    Clearscore is Equifax

The free options are listed first.
