PPI claim rejected by Egg who say I've now missed deadline

Options
I had an Egg credit card in 2001 - so a heck of a long time ago! I wrote to the Canada Square office, who say I DID have PPI, but my claim was rejected (in September 2017):

"Whilst we do acknowledge that there may have been flaws in our sales process, I am not persuaded that any of these sales failings would have affected your decision to take out the PPI policy."

They say it's their final decision, and that I had 6 months to take it further (i.e., from September 2017).

If they've rejected it as a final decision, is that it? I don't even think I'd be due much money, but no one explained about PPI back then, and I certainly never understood what it was.

I realise I've left it very late, but I keep getting MSE emails saying you should keep applying as 'even having had PPI means you were mis-sold'. But in reality, it looks as though the banks can deny mis-selling and end the matter?

Bit flummoxed, really.

Do you really have an email from MSE stating 'even having had PPI means you were mis-sold' ?

You made a complaint, it was rejected and you had six months to appeal to the FOS... you didn’t do this so that is the end of the matter.

Not sure what you’ve read, but having PPI isn’t simply enough to say was mis-sold... if that were the case you would not need to complain as courts would merely have rule that all should be paid back... they didn’t.

Yes, it's an (early) reference to Plevin..

    Thanks Bermonia.
You should also note that your finance does not fall into the scope of Plevin, as it would need to be still active in 2008. So forget any notion that you might still receive even a part refund of undisclosed commission.

That does NOT say "having PPI means you were missold".

Its simply says you should claim if you had PPI. Very very different things.
As another poster said, if it was as simple as PPI=missold, then they would just send you the money, there would be no need to complain and there would be no defence by the firms which clearly is not the case.

    I'm afraid it does say that;
"(Plevin) essentially means that if you got PPI with a loan or credit card from a bank or building society, you were mis-sold."
It then goes on to elaborate in more detail, but it does indeed start off with that very misleading assertion.

When Martin was still here, he did say that often articles are only technically correct with about 70% of the information and the same with his media segments. He said he has limited time wtih media segments and needed to keep the MSE articles short enough for most people to read. He also didnt want to put people off. That meant sometimes ignoring caveats and issues. MSE articles continue in that vein even though he has gone.

To be fair, the original article (prior to recent edits) was even more sensational in it's assertion that all PPI was now to be deemed mis-sold. So they have toned it down. The weekly E-mails received by the OP will be in a greatly shortened form and will probably repeat the earlier error..

In many ways it's no different to the advice article about attempting to reclaim bank charges. That article does everything to encourage a complaint, but does very little explaining that it only applies to current financial hardship.
