Performers fees and VAT

Options
I am part of a group putting on a series of concerts. We are not VAT registered. We have been told that the performers are registered and that we will have to pay VAT on top of their fee. This is a new one to me. Does anyone have any knowledge on the subject?

They should really have given you total cost not excluding VAT cost.

Best to ask for the invoice to ensure you are paying the VAT

Business to business transactions are usually quoted net of VAT. It's business to domestic consumers that need to be quoted inclusive of VAT. The OP can register for VAT themselves in which case they'd be able to reclaim VAT charged to them, but would have to account for VAT on sales/income.
