Special Needs? Special Tarrif!

Options
hey,

I have a daughter that is disabled and has autism, she can't keep her self warm and i can't work cos she needs 24/7 care. My supplier of electric, Southern Electric has a special tarrif for the disabled or what they call "priority" customers. Anyway, i gave them a quick call, answered a few questions and they told me i qualified because i spend more than 10% of the household income on my energy use - rock on, so i now get a whopping discount of 20%, no charge either and i get a special freefone number rather than the 0845, i get priority attention and free lightbulbs etc, the only downside is that there's no gas supply to the village otherwise i'd get 20% off that as well - result:money:

here's the link - give it a go, i'm on it for 2 years guaranteed!

I'm sure some bright spark wil say that they're the dearest to start with anyway but i've never had cause for complaint, and they swapped out my key meter for free so i could pay by direct debit meaning in total i save a rather tasty 26%!!

good luck:D

    Hi,

    Thats good news for you.

Sounds like you are on PSR (Priority Service Register) that gives you a more friendly service than calling the call centre all the time. PSr was a joke when it came out as many people just couldn't get on it but Ofgem have made it easier in recent years.

You are classed as fuel poor if you have to spend over 10%. So, you may also qualify for other help e.g. loft insulation, cavity wall insulation etc so may be worth a look if you ned any of that doing.

Will help a few people as PSR isn't always easy to get info on with the Suppliers.

    Thanks for posting!

Vix - it's an obligation on all Suppliers set down by Ofgem. You would be classed as Fuel Poor making you gain access to other services.

Have a look on Ofgem & Energywatch site for this.

  • Thanks to OP, I have just changed to Scottish Power and gave them a call to check, the woman on the phone knew nothing, apparently!, however when I mentioned Ofgem she contacted someone in the CAREFREE dept who confirmed that priorty services are available if someone in the house is disabled. So Scot Power service is the Carefree Programme and they send an info pack to you with details on applying.
  • What is the classification of disabled??

Good for you liquid stool!! :)

This guide from Energywatch will tell you about PSR. PSR was imposed on utilities several years ago and it as notoriously difficult to qualify. However, it has hanged over the years to make it more accessible after it's initial flaws were picked apart.

    Have a read.
