Transferring private plate to new used car
I'm getting my head in a spin with the different types of forms that are around.
I have purchased a second hand car and would like to transfer the private plate from my old car on to the new one.
I currently own the old one but it is up for sale however, I am wondering if I may have jumped the gun a bit in advertising it as I worry the DVLA may take some time to process any transfer of number registration.....yikes !
The other concern is for my old car I can only find the V5C/2 slip and NOT the entire certificate. Furthermore, the V5C/2 slip is blank for the area where the new keeper and address should be. Am I ok to fill this in myself ?
Sorry for all the questions !

You need to order a replacement V5 - nobody will buy it without one. Assuming you have taxed the car in your name, a V5 in your name will have been issued in the past, so the "new keeper" slip you have (presumably from the previous V5 when you bought the car) will be invalid and won't work if someone buys your car and tries to tax it.
I'd say take the car off the market until you have the paperwork in order.0 -
I had a nice private reg on an old wreck which I wanted to sell but it needed the old wreck M.O.T ing and taxing which would ve cost more than plate was worth at that time..about £600..so it was scrapped..Probably to be used and sold again by DVLA0

1. You need a full current V5C in your name for your old car.
2. Once you have that, go online and apply to have the private plate put on retention. You will probably be advised online to revert the old car to the old plates.
3. You will be sent a retention certificate for the private plate and a new V5C for the old car showing old plate.
4. You are now free to sell the old car.
5. Once you have the new V5C for the new car in your name, go online and use the information from the retention certificate to apply the plate to the new car.
I'm not sure if there are quicker ways to do this but this is the safest.0 -
DVLA is pretty quick nowadays when transferring plates and can be done easily online for both the transfer or by placing it on retention.0

Thanks. Do I need to put the private plate on retention even if I already have the new car in my possession ?
I was just about to press the "pay" button on DVLA's website when I had second thoughts and worried that I may lose my old private plate if I miss some subsequent steps out.
I believe DVLA will allow me to remove the private plate from my old car immediately if I do it online. However, I don't believe I have the logbook for the new car (the dealer said it's all digital these days) so I don't know whether I'd be allowed to transfer the plate without this information. No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30
