Freehold and leasehold questions

Hi
I bought a maisonette a couple of years ago, was a real ballache for the contract to go through (which I know why now......) and took a while. My solicitor is a family friend of 40+ years so would have obviously told us had anything been very wrong with it and they did a very thorough job amending our contact and helping us.
My property is a share of freehold (which is our part of the driveway) we own the share of this with the downstairs. So i take it that we own half that freehold.
We are also the leaseholders of our place which has 86 or something years left.
In our contract, the person we brought it off was given title absolute by the people who sold the house to him. These people were the original owners of the house who converted it into maisonettes. We now have that title absolute.
There are contracts etc going way back to the original owners and who ee bought off with the usual leasehold things (ground rent/charges etc) but we have never done it and the lady downstairs has never even heard or seen any of this and doesnt bother with it.
What does all this mean? Is our place now impossible to sell as the lease is almost 80 years or do we need to pay
What does this all mean? Do we outright own it and not bother paying? Does the council own it?

If you and the other leaseholder share the freehold of the building then you can extend your lease to 999 years free of charge (assuming they agree). If someone else owns your freehold you'll have to pay. There's a guide on this website.
As to what exactly you own... Ask your solicitor?0
