At fault car incident

Hi all

I hit the side of a parked car with no-one inside but waited a bit and eventually met the owner. I admit it was my fault and exchanged details.

I later reported to my insurer about the incident and made no claim as I had minor scratches on my car, but the other car has quite a bad scratch to their door panel.

The car owner later said they'll get some repair quotes, but should I just say to just contact my insurer or their insurer and let them deal with it?

Thanks

Yes, you could give the other owner your insurers details and ask the other owner to contact your insurer directly.

    Hi Zorillo and thanks.

I think the guy wanted to settle the cost privately but to be make the whole process easier, I'll let him know to just contact either insurance company which ever is best for him.

Yes, he might have an ulterior motive for trying to avoid insurance companies or he might just be trying to save himself money in the long run. Either way he can go directly through your insurance so it shouldn't have much impact on his own insurance.

I wouldn't consider settling a third party claim privately personally, too much can go wrong.

I would recommend he contact your insurer who will have an interest in keeping the claim costs down. Many insurers have teams specifically to deal with non fault third parties and it's often quicker and less fuss for the non fault person also.
