New job conundrum

I’m looking for advice about a new situation myself and my wife will be in, in the coming months.

In September 2019 I will be starting a new job. The job pays 18,000 and comes with a house (YEY) this is all great, and will be wonderful. Me and my wife hold some debt that in 2 years will be payed of but currently £500 a month goes out on this. My wife is currently pregnant (Due November) with our 2nd baby, and currently works part time, as she looks after our 2 year old when he isn’t at nursery.

When we move to the new job my wife will be 7months pregnant, she will be in a new area so cannot claim maternity pay, and will not be able to work enough hours during those two months to be able to get maternity pay in a new job.

My question is, is there any extra tax credit, or financial support my wife can get while she is on maternity leave for a year other than the normal child tax? (£88 every 4 weeks per child) Our issues are as follows

- Universal Credit won’t work, as we have a house given, so they won’t let you proceed through the process without stating your current house rent.
- My wife can’t get maternity leave pay, due to her leaving her current job in August and re-locating, not having enough hours left to claim maternity pay.
- My wife can’t work for two months to get extra money, as she will be heavily pregnant by then.
- A lot of benifits only work if both parties are working, my wife has worked 2 days a week for a year and previous to that worked full time, so not sure how to work this one out

We can just about survive, but was just looking to see if there was any extra places we could go, in order for my wife to claim some benifits dueing maternity leave.

Thanks everyone

Why can't she continue work to get extra money? Any particular medical conditions? Pregnancy doesn't generally stop you working.
  • Can you not apply for UC without the housing element?

That makes no sense. You have to give information about rent if you want to claim help with it. If you're not renting it's not applicable.

She will be 7months by the time we move, she will be working until August, but no-one will take a 7months pregnant lady ? Will they?

When I went through it yesterday to look, it gave options for renting of
    - Tenant
    - Private tenant
    - council
    - Staying with friends / family
    - home owner

If I didn’t select any, it wouldn’t let me continue, when I called up, they said I can only use the only application. So I agree it’s stupid, but not sure how to get around it :/ what do you think?

Have you looked at Maternity Allowance (its what women may be eligible for if they are not eligible for Statutory Maternity Pay)

You seem to have two options:
Tenant and enter the rent as Nil - if it will let you, or, if this is not possible
    Homeowner
This would at least let you claim. Once your journal is open you can always post a message explaining your housing situation properly.
