Nobody, that young, should be called Pauline.

That name stopped 30-40 years ago didn’t it?
    Maybe not in the colonies.

My big brother found me a little Ford Fiesta from the trustworthy dealer he always used. I loved that car, it took me everywhere.
I'm currently on my second little red Ford Fiesta. Love them. First one was my mum's and taught all three of us kids to drive, then I inherited it on indefinite loan as I needed a car and my parents no longer needed two. It finally became too old to be economical to run so we sold it and I bought another one second hand.

My older brother's since bought his own first car and that too is a little red Fiesta.
  • My first car was a Sunbeam Stiletto, twin carburettors that used to go out of sync but I loved it. It was white with a black vinyl roof...how cool was that ! Then I got a fiesta which was full of dents and scratches and my dad painted it (with a paintbrush) it was great. Nobody ever parked near me.

So sad for this girl from the USA who has such a big decision to make. I know how she feels, having had a similar choice back in '71.

The answer then was an Austin A40 for £60.....

Who'd be a kid nowadays, eh?

My first car back in 1969 was an A40 (blue with a black roof)
I can't remember how much it cost but I think it was in three figures.

I loved it! Very occasionally I see one and think I'd love to buy another (updated of course)

I hated mine. The shock absorbers were caput and it cornered like a whale. I spun off the road on the uni drive in it, but to be fair, many others came to grief there too.

I had a version of that too; just the standard Hillman Super Imp.
They were great cars, if you were willing to overlook the fact that their technical development wasn't complete when they were launched hurriedly as a rival to the Mini.

You must've been lucky not to have the usual head gasket blow, indicated in advance by a sudden failure of the heater. When that happened to mine, I sold it the same week.

    Caveat emptor! :o
