P800 refund how to claim?

Hey Everyone,
The reason why I opened this thread is to ask a couple of questions related to HMRC's P800 refund.
I don't live in the UK anymore so when a letter was sent to my UK address this January offering the possibility to claim my refund online I didn't know about it. HMRC sent another letter including a cheque and now I can't claim the refund online.

How can I claim my refund? I still have my UK bank account at Lloyds.Should I contact my UK bank and ask them to pay me giving them the cheque details if it's possible or what should I do?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Do you know someone in the UK that can bank the cheque for you?

I might know someone. However the check is with me right now so I may need to get it back to him. Probably he needs the cheque in his hand right?
If he uses my cheque will the money automatically goes to his account?

What about other ways of dealing with it?
  • Some banks - Halifax for definite - now allow you to "deposit" a cheque into your account using just their smartphone app.

Basically you take a photo (using the banks app) and provide some additional info and the money is in your account in a few days.

Might be a safer option than involving someone else. Remember once you let someone pay your cheque into their account (if it's even possible) then it effectively their money, you are relying on their goodwill to pass it onto you.

I didn't mean for someone to pay it into their own account because that may not be possible. The OP will have to give their acc number and sort code to be able to pay it into their acc.

  • Morals of the story,

1). Keep HMRC informed of your address

2). Technology never ceases to amaze
