This sounds really cheeky

I did take out an HSBC loan some years ago (think it was for £5K), they wouldn't provide the loan unless I took out the PPI. I did claim on it a few years after because I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and the remainder of the loan £800 (I think) was paid off.
Does it sound cheeky to inquire about a PPI refund?

No, but any successful complaint will see any monies that were used for your claim removed.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0

Saying you didn't want a product that you used and benefited from and asking for a refund... I'd say that was beyond cheeky, down right taking the mick. As above, any refund will be minus the money paid out on your claim. Fortunately for you, they don't come after you for the extra money if your refund for a successful complaint is less than the value of the payout
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
