Time taken to update Windows

Just updated Windows on my laptop and desktop.


The updates on both were:


KB4482887
KB4486553


My desktop took 40 minutes longer for the update than my laptop.
Both using wifi.


My desktop processor is:


3.40 gigahertz Intel Core i7-6700
256 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache
8192 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (4 total)
Hyper-threaded (8 total)
RAM is 16 Mb



My laptop processor is:


2.20 gigahertz Intel Core i5-5200U
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache
3072 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (2 total)
Hyper-threaded (4 total)

RAM is 8Mb


Any ideas why the desktop takes so much longer than the laptop to update Windows?

Microsoft have a different concept of time to the rest of the universe.
It could depend on what other processes are running in the background, but I doubt if even Microsoft could tell you.

What victor2 said. Also if one has a mechanical hard disk vs a solid state hard disk that would make a difference in terms of how quickly updates are applied potentially.

The laptop has a 250Gb SSD and the Desktop has a 125Gb SSD and a 1 Tb HDD.


Both computers have plenty of free space on their SSDs and the HDD.

On your desktop is windows installed on the SSD or the HDD. Different models of SSD also have different read / write if windows is on the SSD the laptop could have faster read/write speeds which would make a difference at how long it takes to install updates but I highly doubt that would contribute to 40mins longer.

Both systems say the operating system is installed on the SSD.


Just for completeness the desktop took a long time at the 20% install point while the laptop was very quick passing that point.
Oh and the desktop is Acer and the Laptop is Dell.



It's no big deal for me I just wondered what was going on seeing as the specs to me - a non techie - look like the Desktop should be a much faster machine..

Many factors involved .
My old PC update and reboot about 45 mins in total .

Delays are sometimes down to the simple fact that updates have issue with 3rd party devices on a machine that the update process does not recognize and it sits there figuring out what to do with them.

one of the updates needed a reboot. did you reboot both devices at the same time? didn't time my 2 x pcs updating but it couldn't have been > 20 mins

Both computers rebooted in less than 3 minutes.


The laptop update and reboot took about 20 minutes.


The desktop update and reboot took about 60 minutes.


Both done at the same time.


I'm on a fast internet connection.
