I have never paid a carpet fitter. The fitting was always included in the price I paid at the shop.

Same here. Even if the store had 2 prices, supply only or supply and fit I still had to pay the fitter. If the doors are going to catch the new carpet the fitters remove them. That's what happens.

Although I don’t use them, carpet rites says you pay the third party Fitter on the day.

I have used several companies over the past couple of years (I've just had my stairs refitted) - in every case the charge for fitting has been shown as a separate charge on the invoice- but I was told this was there and was to be paid in cash on the day.

OP needs to check their invoice and receipt from the shop to see what is shown.

Leaving a door off as it no longer fits is also normal- I'm not sure what else a fitter is expected to do?
