Customer Service Review

Options
Hello!

Ive organised a 'Customer Service Review' for tomorrow with my (Royak Bank of Scotland) because I have just finished my final exams, and want to get my account changed to a graduate account, and open a bill account, increase overdraft etc as I am starting work in two weeks and need some extra cash until I start getting paid.

Anyway, I was wondering If anyone had ever been to one of these things, and what I should be aware of! For Instance, is it worth me making a list of all the things I need to do, so i dont forget anything? Would it be worth taking in a copy of my intended budget? And are they likely to try and sell me anything???

If anyone can give advice of what to expect and what would be worth doing in advance to get the most out of it, i'd appreciate it!

Having things written down is a good idea (and planning your budget will impress the interviewer).

However, I'd pick a different bank myself (RBS is one of the too-big-for-their-boots rip-off banks which pays only 0.1% on credit balances in current accounts and, now that you're about to become an earner, that's the position you will be in very shortly).

I'd pick A&L myself (5% on credit balances) although whether they'll offer someone in your position their free overdraft facility I can't say.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You will be given a sales talk. End of story.
However they describe it they will try to sell you a better account (at a cost to you) a loan a credit card an insurance policy a savings policy a life policy a pension a mortgage etc etc.

Yes, it will be a sales pitch.

Personally I wouldn't bother with it, and A&L is a very reasonable bank to move to (you should be able to get a cash inducement too, if you apply online). They also provide a free 12 month overdraft on account opening.

As a new graduate, with a job, you will have banks fighting over you. They know that the chances are you will start off working life with a propensity for debt, but that you are a good long term risk since you will probably end up as a high earner. They also know that you will likely be financially inexperienced, and fairly easy to persuade to take on non-optimum products.

By far the best way to proceed is just to research the market leading products in the categories you want via moneysupermarket or by asking here, and apply direct. Don't go to a meeting with a bank purely because you've banked with them in the past - it's a pure waste of time.
