Unexpected Payment into Santander account

I have had an unexpected payment into my Santander account. After searching online, I did the recommended thing and called Santander up. They now want to freeze MY bank account until it is resolved. I now cannot use my debit card at all, or make any online transactions. Is there any action I can take, as I really don't think this is acceptable.

Yes, it does seem like overkill. Do you have an account elsewhere? You should consider opening one. This is one of the many reasons not to rely on just one bank.

Hi, basically, I'm 17, and I have current accounts with HSBC, Lloyds and Starling Bank. I also have a savings accounts with HSBC, and a Help to Buy ISA with Halifax. I've seen a savings account by Nationwide that offers 5% interest, but you need to have a current account with them to open it, but I don't want to switch away from HSBC. Will having 4 active current accounts at 17 affect me negatively in the future?

I don't know whether he added NW as well as Santander.....

Yes, I have accounts with HSBC and Nationwide as well, but Santander is my main account now, and I don't have very much in the others - certainly not enough to last 2 weeks, which they said is roughly how long the investigation will take.

Yep, got rid of Lloyds and Starling and opened accounts with Santander and Nationwide.

Perhaps your parents could lend you the money you need for a couple of weeks?

Presumably you are still 17 and therefore have limited lines of credit. You would probably have a strong case for reclaiming any short-term borrowing costs from Santander, providing the borrowing was necessary and the costs reasonable. You could make the same case for any loss of interest or penaties you would incur from the necessary cashing in of your savings accounts.

It would be worth having a conversation with Santander about their actions putting you in financial hardship in the first instance.

OP How much was the 'unexpected' credit?

They want to freeze your account or they have done? If this is a legit thread I imagine they want to ensure the funds don't get moved elsewhere in case the sender shouts for them back.

OP, just use your savings in the meantime and tell Santander to reimburse you for any lost interest/fees that result.

Is anyone else with a Santander account prepared to contact them to ask what the procedure is when this happens because this just sounds plain wrong?
