Hi guys, I've been with RAC over the years and occasionally manage to get a slight discount on my annual renewal. I just wondered if anyone had any tips please? or if there is a better company to go with ? Thanks!

I shopped about for a bit last year. I found that my car insurance gave the best deal. It is something around £7 a month. This gives me 6 call outs a year including home start, nationwide recovery, hotel and courtesy car.

I switch between the AA and RAC every year, always get the new customer discount. If you use a cashback site you can usually bring the price down a lot also!

They both have their own patrol vehicles and have provided the same level of service to me over the years.

I personally wouldn't switch to another provider because they contract out the service to local recovery agents. You can end up with a really good service or a really bad service (some local recovery agents will try to rip of you off by towing you to their garage and overcharging you)

Crossing your fingers is possibly the cheapest option. But if you do breakdown it wont give you the service you require.

Same with a cheap policy. Not much good if its one that takes you upto 5 miles home or the nearest garage if your 100 miles from home.

There is an old thread where someone did that and complained unfair when the breakdown refused to take then 100+ miles home because they only had the cheap basic policy.

Nationwide Flexplus account £13/month gives you full breakdown cover (including at home and EU), plus worldwide travel insurance, mobile phone insurance (for the whole family), 3% interest on current account and very good customer service.

    Cheap isn't always good.

Green Flag is about £50 for their top UK only offering.

I'm with Aviva for my breakdown insurance. Whenever I have broken down, they send the RAC out. So it's worth checking if they come out cheaper for you.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Start rescue for me. Used to be in the AA but never liked the relay where you change recovery vehicles.

If you have a Ford you can get a years European breakdown free with a service. Just had my Cmax serviced for £149 and got it. That must be the cheapest way.
