Does anyone with actual banking experience of Duty of Care have a view, please?
Vulnerable customers would be advised to give a relative or friend power of attorney if they needed this level of help with their financial decisions. It would wrong for the bank to get in the middle of such matters.

You obviously won't come back to update, as most posters on here have been ruthless. Unlike Santander, who haven't.

Well at least you've learnt what ruthless actually means.

The amounts were, I believe, in the range £2-£6k...and, of course, paid by cheque.
    Why "of course"?
I couldn't pay anyone by cheque, even if I wanted to.

I have a great deal of sympathy for you, but as has been said over and over, you really stand no chance of getting anything back. There are organisations which do have a Duty of Care in dealing with the public, but banks are not among them, especially when no blame whatsoever can be laid at their door. I wish that all County Forces would have the "LincsAlert" internet facilities that my county police force in Lincolnshire has. I joined the Alert programme a few years ago and get regular advice regarding such scams. I print out some copies and take them to my neighbours, some of whom are vulnerable.

Sorry to reiterate the bad news that others have given. I and my wife are both in our 70's and disabled, we try to stay alert to all the scams nowadays and help our friends and neighbours to do the same.

I do think that a few posters here have been a bit cruel in their comments: have they never done something they regret, which cost them money?
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Yes, I have done things that I regret. Accusing a bank of a ruthless attitude because I spent my money is not amongst them, though.

Bound to have done, yes - but took it on the chin as personal responsibility dictates, rather than go looking for someone else to blame and get recompense from.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
