Transferring a Private Plate - best way?

Hi all

Just after some advice as I am looking to buy a private number plate I have seen, and also going to see some cars this weekend one I will buy.

Imp confused as to the quickest way to get the private plate onto the car, I understand I can buy the plate and put on retention but then I would have to do another transfer, if I buy the car this weekend and pay a deposit, can I buy the plate and use the cars registration number or do I have to wait for it to be transferred into my name?

Both the plate transfer and car transfer may take time so can I assume the car will be transferred by the time the seller of the plate does the forms to dvla?

thanks

Wait until the car is yours or you'll lose the plate if it falls through.

Buy the plate you want and put it on retention. Buy the car you want. Fill out the paperwork to transfer it to your car and change the plate over when it completes.

It does mean you'll need to drive around on the old plate for a week or 2.

this service appears to suggest when in retention you can immediately have the rights to transfer?

Any reputable plate maker will (or should) refuse to do it. But there are plenty of places who will space the characters illegally, as shown by the tw4t numberplates you see driving around :-)

If its a brand new car you're buying, you can get the dealer to put the private plate on for delivery.

If its a used/second hand car then as soon as you assign the plate or transfer owner, a new v5 reference is generated and the existing one will become invalid. Meaning if you transfer the plate first, the existing RK will become the owner of the plate. If you transfer ownership of the car first, you'll need to wait on new v5 (with new reference) before you can transfer the plate

I'd wait until you have the V5 - doesn't take long nowadays, then do the transfer on line. When I bought mine (from DVLA website), the plate price included the first transfer fee.

All "Personal plates" should say that, would be appropriate to any PP owner.

i would buy the plate get the certificate of entitlement in my name, in the mean time buy the new car get it registered in my name on the V5 and then at this point i would spend a few minutes online and put my plate on my new car, ti wouldn't worry me in the least driving around AB12 ABC for a couple of weeks until the paper work was all sorted

If you are buying from a dealer and trading in, ask them to do it. It's something they do regularly.
