Outrageous???

Had 6 items in my eBay basket which I purchased.

Unfortunately it contained an item from a previous transaction that I didn’t want but had forgotten to delete from the basket.

Spent 5 minutes on the Android eBay app trying to cancel the unwanted item purchase but couldn’t. Ended up on iOS but 10 minutes after the error eBay says I’m unable to cancel the item. The item is worth less than £10.

I’ve messaged the seller.... a business user to let them know. What are my option?

Am somewhat annoyed because last week an item I purchased was cancelled out of the blue 4 days in and it then took 3 days to get a refund.

There is no option to just cancel a sale once you have confirmed it . However as you bought from a business you have a right of return for any reason, and a business who watches their messages (and many don't) and who don't want to waste postage money will just cancel your order and that should mean the refund comes back instantly.

You'll probably be blocked by the seller as it costs them the 20p paypal fee that is held, but I'm sure that won't be a bother for you.

If seller doesn't monitor their fees then it might mean you have to request a refund and then return it at your own cost.

I'm not sure though what exactly is outrageous as per your title, understandably you are probably annoyed at yourself but I can't see why leaving something you don't want in your basket then buying it is outrageous?

Thanks for the quick reply.... I’d be happy to pay any money that the business was out of pocket due to my error.

I did message them with a minute of making the purcahase telling them that the item would be returned if sent.... have still not had any reply/contact but as you say they might not monitor there account.

I don’t intend incurring any costs in returning the item as it won’t fit through my letterbox so will be returned as undeliverable when I don’t collect it.

Maybe it’s just me but I do find it outrageous that your unable to cancel an order. If it was days or even hours later when an item might have been sent then fair enough. Having an app that physically doesnt allow you to cancel or refuses to cancel an ordering error after less than 10 minutes leads me to believe that this is a specific business decision taken by eBay to maximise it profits at the expense of its users ie sellers and buyers.

Edit: just noticed it’s a click & Collect so will be easy for it to be returned to sender when I don’t collect it. All this hassle because eBay refuses to allow a short cancellation window.

As a seller I would not welcome any cancellation window however short- I often pack and post right up to the last moment and it is not unknown for me to be just sealing my sacks, get another order in and add that to the mail- I probably wouldn't even refresh my ebay before I shot out the door to get to the mail centre.

Even if there was say a 1 hour cancellation window that was mean I couldn't safely send anything as soon as it was paid as I would always be worried I would miss an email asking for cancellation. I'm also not sure how it would work with paypal as they can't just remove funds from a seller without some sort of reason, just like a bank or a merchant credit card system. If banks, paypal etc could remove payment within a certain window it would be a magnet for scammers.

  • I've always found sellers quite accommodating.

I ordered an item once and had selected the wrong size dimensions and the seller was happy to cancel for me.

I am always happy to cancel something if a buyer asks in sufficient time - but as it is annoying and can cost a seller money I will also block the buyer from buying again.

Thanks for giving the sellers perspective on this.

I have just received my ‘confirmation’ mail from eBay for the item ordered in error. The seller will now go to all the hassle and expense of sending the item to the click & collect location. I won’t pick it up so it will be returned to sender at no cost to me. I then get a full refund.

Hands up I made the error but eBay won’t allow me to rectify it under its current rules. The seller gets shafted although I have sent them 5 msgs trying to cancel.

eBay gets its fees come what may.

Edit: Amazon is able to give a cancellation window then again they aren’t at risk of losing fees.

If you buy from Amazon marketplace which is the same as buying on ebay then you have no automatic cancellation window either ans once again would be reliant on seller noticing messages in time to stop any dispatch.

As for ebay fees, if the seller goes through a cancellation request for buyer then ebay lose their fees, having said that though if buyer returns an item then ebay again lose their fees. Even in the scenario that you intend, when you open your INR case and seller refunds ebay again lose their fees.

You should be able to cancel on Amazon up until the order is marked as despatched. Go to the order page and click on cancel. You can do that with Marketplace or Amazon items.
Once dispatched it's up to the seller to be able to cancel.
Given that anyone (excepting used goods/private sellers) have a "cooling off" period when buying online then any seller just sending after they have been told the buyer doesn't want it is a bit reckless.

Not sure why you had problems as you can cancel an order within one hour of purchase simply by going through MyEbay Purchase History links. Ebay give the buyer the option to do this.
And yes, you can cancel on Amazon too via your orders page.

I have never ever seen this facility on eBay, it doesn't appear on my buying account at all. How does that work then when I sometimes have things in the post within an hour of purchase?
