Most drain plugs sit slightly above the bottom of the sump and I find I get more oil out with the extractor than by undoing the plug.

Find that hard to believe, pipework has to filter trough the very small oil galleries right down to the lowest part of the sump, some what in excess of 2 feet.

Most plugs are on the back of sump at lowest part, bottom of thread just clears inside. Jack front up all comes out. Plus need to jack up most to get filter out and back on any way.

How many different cars have you personally changed the oil on?

I have to raise and axle stand my car , overall it takes the best part of 2hrs to carefully cleanly change the oil/filter.
I'm wondering if it maybe worth investing in a pump all be it for once or twice a year usage?

What the heck are you doing that it takes you that long and how much mileage are you doing to be needing to do it twice a year?

I had to do the front brake discs and pads on my MX5 on axle stands the other week and it didn't take me 2hrs to do that even with a seized slider.

Many are like this where there's a small recess in the bottom of the sump where the plug is:

Or this where there's a recess where the plug goes in:

One of the benefits of using a pump is that it makes the oil change so easy that one is more inclined to do an interim change between the official service-intervals. Most people would consider this to be a good thing, although I don’t doubt there will be those who would argue against unnecessary oil changes.

The last time I done the oil change, I'm sure it took well over an hour, partly because I had trouble raising the car to get it on axle stands. I guess I was being over careful. I do less than 6k per year so far.

And others, particularly steel pans have the drain plug on the side of the sump a little above the bottom.
