I think there are restrictions on Indian currency - you cannot get it outside of India. Others will probably give you more info. When I went it was to major tourist areas & we just took a debit card.

Yes theres restrictions on how much currency you can bring into the country. I always take about £50 worth of Indian rupees with me and convert the rest at the airport in India. If you are landing in a major city then you'll find Thomas Cook or other companies at the airport for currency. If you dont, then ask where the nearest one is.
You can always use the ATM machines as well.
  • 1)get a nationwide card - get the best rate - when i landed in Bombay
    2) you can exchange money at the airport - but you may not get a good rate (though they do bargin) -
3)best thing to do is exchange your money in the centre (or hotel) where they may give you a good rate.
4)BTW, do it on the weekday when the currency is at its highest.

REMEMBER TO BARGIN AT ALL PLACES.

Hello zfrl. Did you use your debit card to get money? We are going to India next month, and our bank will absolutely not tell us how much money we could get from Atm's in India on a daily basis. Seriously!

Hello Mister Mister. Where do you get your rupees to take in to India? We can't seem to see a source, in the UK.

Yes I used my Nationwide card & used it to pay at restaurants - I cannot remember the amount you can withdraw but remember your money goes along way. It must have been a reasonable amount or I would remember - we went in 96.

Thanks for your input, Zfrl. So much more helpful than my bank!
