Just a questions sra, how easy/possible would it be to but + next to the main areas on the quick to jump to list? or does that make it not quick to jump to. Like with windows with the main tabs at the top, when it drops down it selects the most used and the opens them all? or as in the files and folders structure where you can open up further as you go down??

....I'd like to say I'm not a techie....but that's what I used to do....not that it would appear by the way I've written this...... ;)

I think the best analogy I have seen for the Coffee shop for old stylers is the fact that in days gone by the over the fence talk was the day-to-day contact that many people got. Nowadays this is more likely to happen on the net, and is strongly apparent in old style. I will attribute that to Queenie, as if memory serves me right, she said. Apologies if it wasn't Queenie, please don't shout at me!!!

However, the reason for saying that is the amount of Old style things I have learnt from many of the posters in OS have not come thorugh *main* threads but in snippet form within threads, when they might have gone off track slightly. These aren't things I would have asked....I didn't know they could be done!!! but also aren' things that the poster has thought *wow* did you know of this, maybe cause to them it's like breathing!!!

No, not at all just as it doesn't bar anyone from starting a discussion when I have already started a thread about it

Eh where did I say it did, aren't you taking this a little personally ,if you read my post on this thread properly you will quite clearly see the point I am making and why your thread was mentioned and in what context.

I have a right to comment just as you have a right to make a post,if I have said anywhere that you don't .......................point it out or better still feel free to report it.

Having read through this thread, I can't help feeling that some people are forgetting that these are public forums not private chat rooms.

If we had small sub forums opening up on this site for the use of a small number of people, I think it could look very unwelcoming to any new members (or prospective new members). It can be scary for a new member to get up the courage to post in a forum. If they see forums filled with personal chat from a few members who all know each other, this is surely going to make it more difficult for them.

I remember when I first joined. The most daunting board for me was the moneysavers arms. It wasn't the posts that were daunting. It was the fact that everyone seemed to know each other very well. It makes you feel (as a newbie) like an outsider. This was the only board that I felt this way about so it wasn't too much of a problem. I feel that if we start getting private chat rooms as sub sections in boards, this will make the site more daunting (and unwelcome) to new users.

I think I might be in the minority here but I think the Old Style board would be fine if it worked like it did until a few weeks ago. There's a perceived need for a separate place for chat because people were being told off for being off topic/too chatty/not Old Style enough etc etc. Threads were moved, deleted and people were askedto get back on topic.

Now that the board isn't going to be so heavily policed, it will hopefully get back to how it was. Some posts strictly informative, some chatty, most somewhere between the two.

I have to say after re-reading a few posts from when Cathy first started out....she used to tell those that didn't like the *chatty* posts to "not read them"

I think, that could be where the board needs to go back to, but if it can't....then a sub-forum is needed

Can't there be an actual 'chat room' as none of this is actually chat, it is messages placed on a message board. If people want to chat then let them, but let it be proper chat in 'real time'.
    It's not impossible.

What it seems that a few people want is a room to go to so they can pass general chit chat with each other that has no relevance to any of the boards.

The following is meant to be a constructive suggestion, I'm not trying to take the P out of anyone. Why don't you all download MSN Messenger and create your own private chat room? (this is perfectly possible). This way you can be on this site and contribute to the boards as they are meant to be used, and also chat to each other privately without any fear of a board guide deleting messages 'cos they are off subject. You can make your chat room invite only so you are not disturbed by anyone you don't want to chat with. Doing this would be free, which is very in keeping with being an MSEr.

These boards are getting very popular. I see we now have nearly 46,000 members for the forums. It would be wrong IMHO to change the boards for a tiny minority of people. If there are say 30 people wanting this private room, we are talking about .06% of the membership.

Also, if this room is created. Where is it going to stop? Would that mean we could have a private room in the Techie board so we could talk about what changes we are going to make to our computers? Or a private room in the telephones board so we could talk about who phoned up last night? This could end up getting way out of hand and change the whole feel of this site. I for one like the format of this site and feel any changes like this would be a change for the worse.

Because of the size of the membership. Board guides are crucial to the smooth running of this site. There have been occasions in the past when I've not agreed with decisions taken by them, but we have to remember. These people are volounteers who offer their time freely to keep this site running smoothly. If they weren't here, the boards wouldn't take long to slide into complete anarchy. For each board there is a guideline as to what we can post. If posts break the guidelines then it's the boardguides job to move/delete/lock the post. I can't see the problem with this. For a site this size we need rules to keep it running as we know it. I think they must be doing a good job because the site is getting bigger and more popular. I take my hat off to all the boardguides for doing what is sometimes a completely thankless job.

i think murtle has made a fair point, and im quite happy to step away from the soapbox for the time being and see how things go with less heavyhanded boardguiding.

however, if the problem remains, i will be back :D think our incredibly high turnover of new threads and a lot of stickies is not always the best combination.

any way of making the page longer :D ?
