Energy saving light bulbs

Thanks! Unfortunately we aren't near an Ikea and their delivery for my postcode still says "coming soon" (it's said that since august!). Though i have bought ikea stuff before by getting family to buy and send on.
Are these the one's you mean? http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80087650 . To me they look taller than the normal one's though it may just be an illusion as they seem narrower. There's literally less than 1cm between the top of the normal golfball bulb which are 70mm tall and the top of our shades so the height needs to be almost identical else it will look bad. Any chance you can take one out and put a tape measure next to one of them for me? Are the one's you have the 11W or 7W ones? If it's going to fit i'll get my sister to order them for me and post!
Andy
The IKEA bulbs look very similar to these:

As you can see, they appear to be 86mm in length, so 6mm too long for
your fittings."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -

Yes I think they are the ones.
I will go and measure one for you (and also confirm 7 vs 11) however all the ones that don't need a ladder to get to right now are on so a bit warm to start handling so I will look tomorrow and come back to you.
I must admit, all our light fittings that use them are open at the top so clearance has never been an issue but they don't look any bigger.

Those ones are ES and not SES so will be bigger.0 -

Nope. They're just a technology company who understand both technologies better than politicians.
Which? recommended GE's "curly wurly" energy saving bulb, as the best buy for replacing ordinary tungsten bulbs. I cannot remember the full details of the recent report, but I expect your local library has a copy.0 -
Having now checked, the Ikea ones are much longer than normal and are certainly longer than the 70mm limit you have.
They work for us because of the type of light fitting we use.
Sorry to get your hopes up0 -
I'm fed up with buying R63 spotlight bulbs for my kitchen, they blow all the time! I've replaced two with mini energy-saving "stick" bulbs. They don't look the best, but light the kitchen effectively enough.
At some point, when we redecorate I will be getting a new light fitting but this will do for now.
It never occurred to me to try this till I saw similar bulbs being used all over the hotel we were staying in in Turkey in recessed ceiling spots!!:wave:0 -
The Energy Saving Trust have just released a super publication on Energy Saving Bulbs

Hi,
As I expect most of us here now use energy saving bulbs, 100W of light for the price of 40Watts. I am not sure how true this is but maybe others may shine some light on it, but if you use this type of lamp then once on it is best left on all day, the reason being is that it is the first few seconds of switch on that uses a lot of electricity and to say switch it on or off as you leave a room would defeat the energy saving benefits, is this true ?
Also I hear that the normal house hold light bulbs will be phased out from the end of this year. It will be against the law for a shop to sell the old style 150Watt bulbs as from next month and 100w and below will follow over the next year.
Justin
It is best to switch them off to save energy. The older strip light fluorescent tubes use a bit more when first switched on, but it is only a few minutes worth of electricity compared with that used to run. The compact fluorescent lamps are better.
The reason compact fluorescents are not ideal for frequent switching (eg. over 10 times a day) is that it can reduce their life by blackening the tube ends, especially with lower quality cheap ones.
150W bulbs are not really a good idea as they get very hot and will damage most lamp holders and fittings.
It does seem difficult to currently get compact fluorescent lamps over 20W (around 100W equivalent) in the shops, I would hope that this will improve as 150W bulbs are phased out.
I like plenty of light and use 25W compact fluorescent lamps, I don't think 20W is bright enough for a large room.
