Switching from Pre-Pay to Contract
Hi all,
We've recently bought a house that was previously a rental property. At the moment, we've got Gas & Electricity via pre-payment and want to move to a standard monthly contract.
Hoping to join the Cheap Energy Club, but all of the deals being offered to me on there are pre-payment based on my current payment method.
Does anyone know how I could arrange installation of a pay monthly meter without being tied-in to a long contract with a specific energy provider?
Thank you!

Phone up your current provider and ask them if they could replace the meter for a credit one. Expect to have to pass a credit check.
Once the meter is in place you are free to switch.0 -
I moved into a place with pre payment meters some years ago but in winter it was terrible going out in cold wind or rain to get credit for the meters so I just phoned the supplier up as asked to have a credit meter installed they installed it without a fuss as I was a new tenant . I also set up a DD with them at the same time and they said any credit on the meters would pass onto the account as credit.Someone please tell me what money is0

If your current provider wants to charge you for changing meter, you might find it beneficial to move to one of the big 6 on their standard tariff - have the meter installed - and then move provider again.0 -
Thanks all, the pre-payment meter is British Gas at the moment for both G&E, so I'll get in touch with them today.

BG do a credit check. They may ask for a deposit refundable later. Thanks all, the pre-payment meter is British Gas at the moment for both G&E, so I'll get in touch with them today.

Since 2014 all suppliers were banned from charging for the actual meter exchanges by an OFGEM ruling0 -
BG are known for having an extremely tight policy when asked to swap a Paygo meter for a Credit meter, and from posts on this site have refused even from customers with A1 credit ratings.
EDF have a more relaxed policy, so if BG say NO, switch tom EDF0
