Insurance on purchased car while at dealer
Ok I might be overthinking this but can’t see a definitive answer anywhere to this.
I have purchased a car at a dealer using my own finance where they have paid the car dealer direct. There was a problem taxing the car due to a problem with the V5C so I haven’t been able to drive away and may not be able to until I get the new V5C from DVLA. The dealer still has the keys and obviously won’t pass to me until it’s taxed and insured by me.
My concern is that the car is paid but I haven’t filled in a new keeper document yet. At what point do I need to insure it? I’m thinking more against theft/accidental damage. Would I be right thinking that until I drive it away it would be covered on the dealer insurance should anything happen to it while there? I can’t change my existing policy as I would lose cover on my current car which I need until I can actually drive away my new one and I can’t take out an additional policy because I can’t use no claims discount on more than one policy at a time.
I will ask the dealer but don’t want them to just fob me off.

Nothing to do with him. Go get the keys. The dealer still has the keys and obviously won’t pass to me until it’s taxed and insured by me.
Change insurance to new vehicle, get temporary 24hr cover for old one.I can’t change my existing policy as I would lose cover on my current car which I need until I can actually drive away my new one and I can’t take out an additional policy because I can’t use no claims discount on more than one policy at a time. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. If it's been paid for it's yours. No need for you to have it taxed or insured if it's not on a public road.
If they want to hold onto it, then they need to accept full liability for it.
What's up with the V5C? New car or used?0 -

Depending on the dealership (size) they can tax the vehicle on the day of collection, the V5c always follows in the post, some offer a short term insurance but it's probably better to arrange your own before collection, it's not as if you do not know the registration details.0 -
They tried to change ownership online and it wouldn’t let them and the dvla said they would change ownership without V5C but I would have to wait for new one before I can tax and could take a couple of weeks so not as simple as just getting 24 hr insurance on my old car if it’s going to take this long.
Apparently it’s something to do with it having private plates before but I’m going to try and find out more today. It’s a used car but from a large chain (Evans Halshaw)0
