PoA and cheque book question

I am PoA (joint and several) with my sister for our mother's affairs. We both registered with Lloyds for Mum's account. I was given online access to Mum's account (paying bills etc). as my sister doesn't use a computer. I can also use phonebanking to access Mum's account using my own Lloyds phone banking credentials. Again my sister would not do this and isn't with Lloyds herself anyway.

However, I'm going into hospital soon so will be laid up for some time so I may not be able to pay monthly bill myself using internet banking. I have the only cheque book, still in Mum's name but we are both signatories when a cheque is needed.

My question is can I ask the bank for another cheque book for my sister to use? It will obviously be issued with the set of numbers following the book I have. Unless of course the bank can do faster payments free from a branch, which I doubt.

Yes, I'm sure the bank will be able to send you a new cheque book even if you haven't finished your current one.

Also your bank will probably offer you free Faster Payments in branch. CHAPS payments often have a fee attached, but unless your bills are in the tens of thousands that's unlikely to be required.

Couldn't you set up SOs or DDs for the monthly bills?

And/or send your sister enough cheques from your cheque book to cover your stay in hospital?

I agree with this. Make sure that SO/DD are paid a few days earlier to avoid late fees.

Why not just give her your mother's cheque book (not yours!) for the duration?

When I obtained POA for my Mum I obtained a debit card in my name for Mum's account. I was told by the bank manager that there was no need to get a new chequebook issued as I was now an authorised signatory I could sign her cheques. The situation never arose when I actually had to issue a cheque so I don't know if the advice was correct. As your sister is also an attorney then I see no reason why she should not use the same cheque book that you have been using... unless the problem that she does not live near you so you cannot hand it over.

Yes I could set up future payments to cover my stay, but it is reliant upon my sister making a transfer from elsewhere. As long as she does it, and she can on the phone, it would be OK.

I could hand the chequebook to my sister. Strangely, when we both went to a branch to get PoA set up on Mum's account, they told my sister to still hold onto onto Mum's debit card. Whilst me, a Lloyds account holder myself, was issued with a Cashpoint card in my name for Mum's account, which actually I've only ever used to authenticate myself to discuss Mum's account at a branch.
