Exceeded limit fee on Barclaycard

I received this month's statement from Barclaycard and it included an extra
£20 fee for "Exceeded limit".
It is true that I did go over the limit (of just £600) due to some extra shopping
I had to do this month (mine and wife's birthday party) which I didn't account for properly but it was only exceeded by £26 during one week. I don't feel its fair to be charged £20 for this small mistake.
Should I contact Barclaycard about this and politely request them to reconsider? Has anyone had this problem before?
Thanks for any help.

The legality of some of these charges is doubtful, however you did sign the credit agreement agreeing to let them charge you £20 if you ever exceeded your limit.
Your best bet is to phone them up, point out the excess time was brief and has now been paid off, and ask nicely to be let off this once. Many companies will let customers off once (only) for the sake of good customer relations.0 -
You might be able to, especially if it's the first and only time you've exceeded limit, always pay on time etc. Maybe tell them you'll take your business elsewhere if they don't remove the charge?
But if they say no then ultimately you DID exceed the limit and so the charge, though possibly disproportionate, is well within their rights...The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions belong to me; the distinction is yours to draw...0 -

Reaper - interesting point you say about the legality of these charges... have I missed a discussion somewhere involving this? Would be interesting to read...The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions belong to me; the distinction is yours to draw...0 -
The legality aguement is that they should not be charging you more than the breach has cost them financially. There needs to be a test case but lawyers feel the banks would almost certainly lose.

Interesting... with the recent announcement of Clearing House reform too, we may well have a modern banking system in the next few years! The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions belong to me; the distinction is yours to draw...0

Hi Cardinal-Red
I have a BC and went over my limit about 2 years ago. It was my fault completely as this was yours and never even entered my head to ask for the fee to waived. A credit limit is set for a purpose-if it was not suitable, you should have asked for an increase.
TBH learn from it-as I did and dont do it again!
The only problem now you have is that with Barclaycard you have gone over your limit-they normally require a further 6-9 months of regular payments and keeping within your credit limit before they will increase it again.
I learnt the hard way also, but have never done it again.
Good Luck in whatever you decide to do.

Shame the same thing doesn't work with parking fines!
Or the £100 charge for filing your tax return late.
I accept that the banks shouldn't make large profits out of fees, but surely they need some way of penalising people for not paying their bills on time or running up large overdrafts?

Dear Penny Pincher,
It's a good job that you've littered your posts with so many kisses otherwise I might think you disliked me!
It was the original poster who overshot his credit limit!
Feel the love!!
