Thanks poshphil. Partner said exactly the same - either drop our offer or ask for other financial incentives. Personally, and I know morals don't come into it, I feel like this makes us just as unreasonable as them and I don't want to purchase the house with bad blood. I also wouldn't want them to think this was just an orchestrated way to save us money, as it really wasn't.
From what others suggested re the loan and the desperate need to complete by the end of March it could be that it would be worth a few quid off the price for them. That is .. if the solicitors can actually do it by then?0 -
Part of me thinks they might be twisting the truth slightly. As I said, why would you market a house if you friend had showed enthusiasm about buying it? Surely you would try and come to an agreement without an EA, saving yourself a percentage of the sale cost?
Ignoring a contract you've signed is never wise.0 -
I completely agree - and as I said to the EA, ultimately it's about who offers the most money. I know if I was selling a house and I'd had an offer in the first 48 hours, I'd probably want to hold off and see what I could get.

Likewise buyers may offer over the odds to secure a particular property. To repay a few £k over 20 years plus of ownership is nothing.0 -

Oh sorry, I meant...if their friend had expressed interest in buying your house, surely you would offer it to them first before marketing it with an EA?
Anyway, turns out this "friend" is actually a "friend of a friend" and he doesn't really know them. As a result, we've stuck with our initial offer and are now awaiting the response.
There is nothing else we can do at this point other than wait. We stressed our position, that we're ready to go but in no rush. We also have another option should this offer not be accepted, so the pressure doesn't feel as immense. Fingers crossed!0 -

Oh don't worry, I will. You guys have collectively been my rock during this process. I think it's amazing how a forum can provide such confidence and reassurance. I really appreciate the time everybody has taken to throw in their two cents and offer their thoughts!
