Late water bill payment

Hi all,
In 2016, I was still at uni and living with some friends in a flat. We paid our bills whenever prompted in the post.
Last week, I got a call from a debt collection company called OposLimited who asked us to pay an unpaid water bill of £233 for their client Northumbrian Water.
Having ascertained that we did owe this money, I paid the bill. However, at no point until I got the call from OposLimited was I notified about the payment. No letter, no email, no phone call.
Do I have grounds to appeal against the default which has presumably been filed and is impacting my credit rating?
Thanks in advance
Angus

Hi Angus and welcome to the forum

If you agree that you owed the money and failed to adhere to your contractual payments, then a default would be correct. (Assuming that Northumbrian Water report to the CRAs).
Have you checked your three credit files? Is there a default marked on any of the files?I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.
I love my job

Hi Angus_2019, did your tenancy agreement say you and your friends were responsible for paying the water bill?
BTW, you can check your credit file for free by registering with https://www.noddle.co.uk and/or https://www.clearscore.com.0 -
Did you provide a forwarding address when you moved out?
If not then no, the default stands - even if they had written to you, then the default would probably still stand anyway0 -
Ok, that all makes sense. Thanks for everyone’s advice.0
