Late water bill payment

Hi all,

In 2016, I was still at uni and living with some friends in a flat. We paid our bills whenever prompted in the post.

Last week, I got a call from a debt collection company called OposLimited who asked us to pay an unpaid water bill of £233 for their client Northumbrian Water.

Having ascertained that we did owe this money, I paid the bill. However, at no point until I got the call from OposLimited was I notified about the payment. No letter, no email, no phone call.

Do I have grounds to appeal against the default which has presumably been filed and is impacting my credit rating?

Thanks in advance
Angus

Hi Angus and welcome to the forum :)

If you agree that you owed the money and failed to adhere to your contractual payments, then a default would be correct. (Assuming that Northumbrian Water report to the CRAs).

Have you checked your three credit files? Is there a default marked on any of the files?

  • Hi Angus_2019, did your tenancy agreement say you and your friends were responsible for paying the water bill?
BTW, you can check your credit file for free by registering with https://www.noddle.co.uk and/or https://www.clearscore.com.
  • Did you provide a forwarding address when you moved out?

If not then no, the default stands - even if they had written to you, then the default would probably still stand anyway
  • Ok, that all makes sense. Thanks for everyone’s advice.
