    (3) Customers will not need to be bothered by meter readers needing access to meters in their home (unless its a battery change for a gas meter)

How often is that likely to need doing?

Suppliers are not allowed to remotely disconnect..at the moment in the UK and I can t imagine why some prat would want to waste his/her time doing that either..

EachPenny mentioned that they could all be reconnected simultaneously; that would put strain on an already strained grid.

Who told you that ? was it on Stopsmartmeters.org.uk ?.The gas meter battery on the smart credit meters lasts around 10 years. Its an easy exchange to just change the battery with meter in situ but with the throwaway attitude nowadays they change the whole meter
.BG s smart gas meters have been around for over 10 years and are now needing battery exchanges.Meter should flag up low battery with the supplier alert remotely that its due.
Gas prepay meters can have most of their batteries changed in situ. I ve done some myself and if the meter is easily reached Its a 3 minute job with the battery pack costing no more than a tenner.. Prepay gas meter batteries have a lot more use than a credit meter so may not last the full 10 years.
