I presume you have simply tried restarting the machine to see if that gets it ?

If so , then open regedit and go to this key .

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender

You will see a subkey in there called "disableantimalware" or something - i forget the exact name - change it's value to 0

Let us know how you get on

Thanks Andy I have tried that one with

"Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Micr osoft\Windows Defender" and change value to " 0 " but the subkey is not there so no option to do that.

Today Ive downloaded Malwarebytes free version but when it started its first threat scan its stuck on " scan startup files " so removed and reinstalled it but no luck so Im thinking of downloading superantispyware next to try and solve the problem.

Mine is normal rock solid, but two days ago it was a pig. Booted 4 times and it still hung and it would not see the internet and hung in various places on start up, so slow to boot, would not load some start up apps.

Turned out MS has release another sneaky update KB4023057 a day or two ago. For me removing the update worked - the first update patch in 10 i've been effected by.
